The campus of MTB is the community of Oberaudorf, Germany, a charming village of about 4,000 people located southeast of Munich in the Bavarian Alps close to the border of Germany and Austria. It is a quiet village frequented in the summer by vacationing Germans who come to Oberaudorf for the health benefits of its exceptionally clean air or to hike its mountain trails.
Teaching, rehearsal and performance venues are scattered throughout Oberaudorf, and virtually anything in the village is walking distance from any other place in the village, much like distances on a university campus. Students experience the life of a small German town and get to know some of the local folks, often making lasting friendships with German young people.
Oberaudorf has several wonderful restaurants, bakery cafés and a variety of shops, as well as pharmacies and doctors' offices to serve you if you should need them. If you choose to stay in town on the weekends, you may enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, bike riding, riding the chair lift and summer Rodelbahn, sunbathing and swimming at the beautiful Luegsteinsee lake, or perhaps attending some Bavarian cultural events. This short video featured on the town's website depicts a typical day in Oberaudorf.
Other great local options might include attending weekend performances at the summer opera and music festival in nearby Erl, Austria, the Tiroler Festspiele Erl. If you'd rather get away and explore Germany, Austria or Italy on the weekends, there are a number of good options for inexpensive day trips, including a very short train ride for shopping or dining in the cities of Rosenheim or Kufstein, touring the fortress in Kufstein, easy day trips to Munich, Salzburg or Innsbruck, and interesting options for overnight trips. MTB staff will be glad to help you with travel ideas!
